During the Veteran's Day weekend, WACYL sent a team of players to compete in a small-sided U15 soccer tournament in Atlantic City. The tournament consisted of four Atlantic City teams, a team from Absecon, and our U14 'Raptors'. The first cold weekend of the year did not deter our team from doing their best as they won their first game of the day, against Absecon, 1-0. The next four games proved tough as our team was not able to score and the Atlantic City teams were able to get behind our tough defense. Figuring our tournament was over after winning one game, our team was provided with the opportunity to play one more game. We would be playing against Absecon again, in what would be the last game of the season. A tough match ensued with neither team getting an open scoring opportunity until our team was fouled inside the penalty box for a penalty kick. In a sequence that should have been caught on video, our player placed her shot low and wide, in a spot where the goalkeeper would have no chance for it. Unfortunately, the shot was a little too wide and bounced off the left post. The goalkeeper, moving to his right to go for the ball, opened up the right side of the goal. The ball, bouncing back into play after hitting the post, went straight back to our player who had taken the shot. The ball was moving very fast, as the shot was taken extremely well, and caught our player unprepared to stop the ball and shoot it again. However, the ball bounced off of her and into the right side of the net for what would be the game winning goal. The exuberance and excitement of the players from winning their first games of the season was overshadowed by what would happen next - the coordinator of the tournament presented our team with the 3rd Place trophy! All of the players wanted to hold the trophy, bring it home, and keep it. It was a perfect ending to a season where all of our players gave it everything they had for every game, no matter the score and situation. The trophy, along with a framed picture of the team, will be displayed in the WACYL Shack at the Weymouth Municipal Field. Way to go Raptors! ~~Andrew Ferrara (Head Coach)
